Scorpion Releasing Unleashes THE WILD EYE on Blu-ray!

One of the most controversial, devastating Italian films of the 1960s, THE WILD EYE (aka L'OCCHIO SELVAGGIO) takes an unflinching look at the world of mondo filmmakers who try to capture the brutality of real life in front of their lens... at any price. Paolo (Philippe Leroy, CASTLE OF THE LIVING DEAD) is a documentarian on a mission to see the world and present human nature in its truest, rawest form, even if it means depriving his crew of water in the desert or infiltrating deadly, war-torn regions of Vietnam to find new violent extremes for his next production. Originally a co-director of the notorious hit MONDO CANE, Paolo Cavara (BLACK BELLY OF THE TARANTULA) takes an inside look at a world gone mad where the act of filmmaking itself carries a high mortal price. Still startling today, this acclaimed production also stars Delia Boccardo (HIGH CRIME) and Gabriele Tinti (LISA AND THE DEVIL) and features a legendary, haunting soundtrack by easy listening legend Gianni Marchetti. Once you've seen it, you'll never look at a camera the same way again. The Blu-ray will contain a 16x9 transfer in the 2:35:1 aspect ratio mastered in HD, an interview with star Lars Bloch, the Original Trailer and it will be presented in English and Italian with English subtitles. The retail price $29.95 and it will be available to order as Screen Archives Entertainment shortly.

Scream Factory To Unleash "Animal Attack" Blu-ray Double Features!

Since Scream Factory’s announcement earlier this week of a double-bill of FOOD OF THE GODS and FROGS went over so well, they thought it would be exciting to follow it up and reveal FOUR more “Animal-Creature attack” films coming sometime next Summer for the first time on the Blu-ray format! So without further ado…Bert I Gordon’s EMPIRE OF THE ANTS (with “Dynasty’s” Joan Collins battling radioactive insects) will be paired with 1982’s devil-possessed cobra film JAWS OF SATAN (with Fritz Weaver as a priest and a young Christina Applegate) as a double feature. The Italian-made prehistoric campy octopus flick TENTACLES (starring John Huston and Shelly Winters) will share ocean space with another prehistoric campy water creature — the Danish-made REPTILICUS — on a double feature as well.

Want More AIP Cult Classics on Blu-ray?

Blu-ray collectors who want more AIP classics on the format, please take note! We have on very good word that Kino is willing to release more of these from the MGM library (and trust us, you will salivate over some of the possible titles), but a lot depends on how well the initial batch of titles sells, especially BLOODY MAMA, which is a terrific Roger Corman epic. The film is available for pre-order from Amazon HERE, so your instant purchase could make the difference and it comes highly recommended from us! Also, please support such upcoming Kino AIP releases from the MGM library such as PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES and JENNIFER. Synapse Films, Inc. has acquired the North American home-video rights to Dario Argento's 1977 classic horror film SUSPIRIA. “I’ve been involved in the restoration and release of many films in my career, but SUSPIRIA has always eluded me, until now,” says Donald May, Jr., President of Synapse Films. “It’s one of my favorite horror films and I’m ecstatic that my business partner, Jerry Chandler, was able to negotiate with the rights holders to release this film. This is going to be an amazing project for us.” Synapse Films, Inc. will work closely with Technicolor Rome and Technicolor Los Angeles to create an all-new high-definition 2K scan from the original negative for a possible 2014-15 video release. “It’s important to spend as much time as possible to create the definitive high-definition home video version for the fans,” May explains. “We’re going to take our time with this one.” Synapse is currently planning the extensive work on SUSPIRIA in conjunction with Technicolor, utilizing both their Rome and Hollywood facilities. The film scanning will be coordinated and supervised by Technicolor Hollywood’s Director of Restoration Services, Tom Burton. Raro To Unleash WEREWOLF WOMAN on Blu-ray!

From notorious Italian exploitation filmmaker Rino Di Silvestro (DEPORTED WOMEN OF THE SS SPECIAL SECTION) comes WEREWOLF WOMAN, which will be released on Blu-ray from Raro Video on October 25. In it, a mentally unstable young woman named Daniela (Annik Borel) fantasizes that she is the reincarnation of her long-dead ancestor, a woman who was thought to have been a werewolf. Dealing with her lifetime of sexual abuse, she seduces men before transgressing into a feral monster, screaming, cursing and ripping them to shreds. When she meets the man of her dreams, Daniela seems ready to forgive her past and bury the beast within until another traumatic encounter seals both her own fate and the collective fates of the Werewolf Woman’s wild wrath. A strange, erotic, outrageously sleazy and provocative Eurohorror classic about a woman pushed well-past the edge of sanity, WEREWOLF WOMAN is finally presented here with the respect it deserves, in beautifully realized, remastered high-definition. Extras include an interview with the director Rino Di Silvestro (19 min. 22 sec.), original Italian theatrical trailer (3 min. 58 sec.), the original English theatrical trailer (3 min. 58 sec.), and a fully illustrated booklet on the genesis and production of the film by Chris Alexander. "Manos" Special Edition Now a Reality!

Shout! Factory, in association with Best Brains Inc., have announced the September 13 release of the 2-DVD set Mystery Science Theater 3000 “MANOS” THE HANDS OF FATE Special Edition. Consider this legendary low point in film history, widely regarded as the worst film ever made, which depicts a family that gets lost en route to a vacation and stumbles into the lair of a cult. Glorious it is, as the film’s characters battle a half-man, half-goat and an evil man in a robe, and the members of the SoL battle terrible writing and acting. Disc 1 of the set includes Mystery Science Theater 3000 “Manos” The Hands Of Fate, and bonus features Group Therapy, wherein Joel, Trace, Frank & Mary Jo relive the horror; MST Hour wraps; and an exclusive mini-poster by artist Steve Vance. Disc 2 offers the original “Manos” The Hands Of Fate feature film, and bonus features Hotel Torgo, a documentary on the making of “Manos” The Hands Of Fate; Jam Handy To the Rescue!: a Ballyhoo production; Hired!, (featuring parts 1 and 2 together at last); and more!

RaroVideo To Release Euro DORIAN GRAY!

On May 17, RaroVideo U.S. will release THE SECRET OF DORIAN GRAY (1970) on DVD. Never before released on DVD in the U.S., this is a 1970s classic Italian film restored to its original splendor. In London, a wealthy, god-like, young man, Dorian Gray, loves Sybil, an aspiring actress; thanks to her, he’s momentarily less self-centered. He’s also sitting, scantily clad, for a portrait painted by his ascot-wearing friend, Basil. When it’s done, Dorian complains he’ll grow old while it stays unchanged – the classic plight of the vain. On the same night, as if he has sold his soul to the devil, exchanging vanity for morality, he ends it with Sybil, and then accepts the seductive offer of a party’s hostess to sleep with her. The next day, the painting looks slightly older. In horror and fascination, Dorian hides it away and continues a life of degradation. Over time, as the portrait becomes hideous, he’s unchanged by his ever-increasing libidinal life; finally, he and Basil face the painting. The exceptionally groovy score by Giuseppe De Luca enhances the seventies milieu. The film stars Helmut Berger, Richard Todd, Herbert Lom, Marie Liljedahl and Margaret Lee. DORIAN GRAY has been restored from the original 35mm negative and will include an interview with the assistant director Maurizio Tanfani.

Severin To Release Duo of Slashers and THE BABY!

Severin Films recently announced that its future release slate includes the slasher classic BLOODY BIRTHDAY (perhaps best remembered for the before-she-was-famous topless dance of MTV star Julie Brown) directed by Canadian exploitation auteur Ed Hunt. In a recent interview recorded exclusively for this DVD, Hunt discusses his entire career and the film was transferred from the original negative in hi-definition, so this will be BLOODY BIRTHDAY as you’ve never seen it before! Severin is also planning a DVD of John Lamond’s Australian horror flick NIGHTMARES (aka STAGE FRIGHT) and the disc will include an audio commentary with Lamond, with the film being presented fully uncut and transferred in 2.35:1 from the original negative. Then there’s THE BABY, truly one of the most bizarre films to come out of Hollywood in the 1970s. Helmed by A-list director Ted Post (MAGNUM FORCE, BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES), the original ads screamed, “What goes on in this nursery isn’t for kids!” Again, expect a new transfer from the original negative so you can fully enjoy the perverse delights of THE BABY.

Some insist only a single print was ever made, while others claim the film never saw the light of day until a copy was “found” in Adamson’s Florida home shortly after he was murdeed. (READ MORE)

"Children" DVD Recall!

VCI Entertainment President Robert A. Blair has announced an immediate recall on the 35th Anniversary Edition of CHILDREN SHOULDN’T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS – EXHUMED EDITION. (Item # 8509). VCI has just discovered a huge error was made in the new special edition DVD of this cult classic, which had just begun hitting the street. Apparently a last second internal miscommunication sent the wrong DVD master to the replicator. The master that made it thru was unfortunately cut by several minutes and had unfinished video corrections. Thankfully VCI’s loyal customers, and fans of the film were kind enough to notify us of this mishap and Blair decided on an immediate recall to fix the matter. Mr. Blair made the following statement: “We pride ourselves in our DVD productions and this is embarrassing! When a mistake like this happens we fix it immediately. For over 30 years VCI has stood by our mission statement to bring our consumers the best in quality from our line of classic and cult films.” VCI will begin an immediate recall of the problem DVD’s and will replace them as soon as the corrected DVD master can be replicated. All direct wholesale and retail customers should contact a VCI Customer Service Rep by calling 800-331-4077, emailing to vci@vcient.com, or faxing to 918-254-6117 to make arrangements. VCI will be posting instructions on their website within a few days which will instruct consumers how to get a free replacement disc.

Midnite Movies Mess!

We have been getting a flood of e-mails asking what’s going on with the March 22 MGM Midnite Movies releases. Well, we’re in the dark like everybody else and couldn’t get any concrete information. All we know is that the titles were released on March 22, but for some reason are only available for sale in Canada, not at U.S. Best Buy stores, or anywhere else in the U.S. for that matter. Three of the double features (FIREBALL 500/THUNDER ALLEY, THE MINI-SKIRT MOB/CHROME AND HOT LEATHER and MORONS FROM OUTER SPACE/ALIEN FROM L.A.), will be available everywhere on June 7, but there is no sign that the others (including PANIC IN YEAR ZERO!/THE LAST MAN ON EARTH and VOODOO ISLAND/THE FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE) will be available for sale in the U.S. any time soon. We purchased our review copies from the Canadian site, DVD Soon. Our only suggestion is to order them from a Canadian retailer like DVD Soon, Amazon Canada, DVD Plus and others. This is turning out to be a real headache for the many fans of this series, but they are out there for sale, even if it is only in Canada. Let’s all hope for better things for the Midnite Movies series in future and that releases continue at some point.
