I LIKE TO WATCH (1982)/SORORITY SWEETHEARTS (1983) Blu-ray
Director: Paul Vatelli
Vinegar Syndrome

Vinegar Syndrome's last Blu-ray/DVD combo release showcases two back-to-back works by sadly forgotten porn director Paul Vatelli with I LIKE TO WATCH and SORORITY SWEETHEARTS.

In I LIKE TO WATCH, Laura (Bridgette Monet, BABYLON BLUE) is no blushing virgin, but she's more of a spinster than her aunt Leticia (Pat Manning, MAXIMUM HEAD) thanks to a frustratingly chaste relationship with boyfriend Mike (Mike Horner, TASTY); indeed, she gets hot and bothered spying her aunt with regular fling Phillip (Herschel Savage, PRETTY PEACHES 2) and is insulted that Mike does not want to rush things with her because of the baggage he has brought from his divorce. Laura is not the only one who likes to watch, however, as maid Gretchen (Anna Pierce) spies plumber Mark (Kevin James, BABYFACE 2) snaking Leticia's assistant Kim (Little Oral Annie, FRENCH LESSONS), and Laura walking in on Kim's seduction of Gretchen emboldens her to step out on Mike with Leticia's favorite client Linda (Lisa De Leeuw, ALL THE WAY IN!) whose boyfriend (David Cannon, HER WICKED WAYS) also likes to watch (and join in). Left to his own devices, however, Mike may not be able to resist temptation when models arrive at Leticia's in preparation for her TV special.

The same cast returns in SORORITY SWEETHEARTS, it's winter break and bookish Cindy (Monet), horny Sugar (Linda Shaw, BODY DOUBLE) and her roommate Bobby Jo (Angel Burgeon, COED TEASERS) are housebound along with frustrated housemother Jean (De Leeuw) whose married lover Jerry (Savage) cancels on her at the last minute. When Sugar learns that Cindy is as much a virgin as the princesses she dreams about, she and Bobby Jo conspire to hook her up with a Prince Charming at a triple date romantic dinner with beaus Jim (Marc Wallice, PRETTY PEACHES 3), Andy (Richard Reynolds), and Mark (Cannon). Even Jean may get to steam things up outside of the kitchen when she has to pick up Sugar's hunky brother Jack (Horner) home from the army.

Neither film is particularly original or even novel, but director/cinematographer Vatelli – who directed roughly thirty features before his early death at age thirty-three in 1986 – proves himself quite confident as a director of sex scenes and dialogue, with slick-looking films featuring decent production values as well as mostly relatable characters and naturalistic performances. He derives much heat from the theme of voyeurism in both films, with the highlight in SORORITY SWEETHEARTS being Sugar watching Cindy's defloration and mimicking the same positions with her own bewildered boyfriend. It might have been interesting to see what Vatelli could have done in the mainstream, or at least direct-to-video horror or exploitation, as the all-too-short sequence in I LIKE TO WATCH in which Mike searches for the two teasing and taunting models among Leticia's dress mannequins conjures up imagery worthy of both BLOOD AND BLACK LACE and TOURIST TRAP. The humor is mostly light and the cast seem to be having fun with the dialogue scenes. Future porn auteur Michael Zen (LATEX) shares editing credit with a "Dick Harde" while a "Mike Hunt" shares screenplay credit with Vatelli for SORORITY SWEETHEARTS. Both films have theme songs, with the I LIKE TO WATCH's song credited to Three Bells West and almost worthy of a mainstream film of the period.

I LIKE TO WATCH was one of the few adult films released on laserdisc by Image Entertainment, but both films could be found more widely on DVD from Cabellero in old tape master transfers likely of the poor quality one expects of the label. Vinegar Syndrome has transferred both films from the original 35mm camera negatives and restored them in 2K. I LIKE TO WATCH has its share of dark interiors which are grainier, and some shots backlit by fire or with spying rim lit by light from other rooms do look softer (and perhaps a little steamy), but more conventionally lit interiors and exteriors reveal crisp definition and detail. SORORITY SWEETHEARTS is an overall brighter looking film, with only the title sequence and some of Cindy's quickly-glimpsed knight in shining armor fantasies looking softer and grainier. The DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono soundtracks are both in good condition with cleanly recorded dialogue, music, and limited sound effects. Optional English SDH subtitles are included for both films. Only I LIKE TO WATCH has a theatrical trailer (2:50). The cover is reversible and the first 2,500 copies ordered from Vinegar Syndrome include an embossed slipcover. (Eric Cotenas)
