Saving the Midnite Movies: The Saga Continues...

Some years ago when Sony had control of the MGM library, DVD Drive-In started an online petition for the continuation of MGM's Midnite Movies series after it had been dormant. We also suggested dozens of possible Midnite Movie candidates, with the petition gathering over 5,000 signatures. So impressive was this petition, that Fox (who currently distribute the MGM film library on DVD) made prominent reference to it on there official press materials the last time a batch of Midnite Movies was released back in 2007.
It's now been
almost two years since MGM has released any Midnite Movies or any new-to-DVD
genre classics, and sadly, distributor Fox has no interest in releasing anything
of the sort with "nothing on the horizon" in terms of Halloween DVD
releases for 2009! Ironically, MGM has been working on new transfers/restorations
of such popular films as BURN, WITCH BURN! and
THE CRIMSON CULT (aka CURSE OF THE CRIMSON ALTAR),
but Fox has since showed no interest in getting such titles on the DVD schedule.
Furthermore, titles with already prepared extras such as MASTER
OF THE WORLD (a video interview with screenwriter Richard Matheson) and
THE QUATERMASS XPERIMENT (a video interview with
the late director Val Guest) are amazingly, still sitting in limbo. As evidenced
through recent airings on various HD channels, MGM has remastered such titles
as TWINS OF EVIL, VAMPIRE
CIRCUS, HANDS OF THE RIPPPER (how in blazes
can these Hammer horrors still not be out on Region 1 DVD?!!), DR.
GOLDFOOT AND THE GIRL BOMBS, BLACK SABBATH,
BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW, OCTA-MAN,
THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN, WITHOUT WARNING
and others, but still no signs of interest in releasing them on DVD or licensing
them to another company. There are many, many titles from the American International
Pictures, United Artists, Cannon and other film libraries that MGM owns that
need to be released on DVD.
For some reason, Fox/MGM is under the impression that fans only buy these types of films at Halloween time (or that they can only be marketed during that season), and it's probably already too late to change any kind of Halloween DVD schedule they already have. But there's still no reason why these titles should not come out on DVD (during any quarter of the year) especially with major studios like Warner and Sony effortlessly going through their vast vaults to release timeless classics and even the more obscure titles on the digital format.
