ZOMBIE ISLAND MASSACRE (1983) Blu-ray/DVD Combo
Director: John N. Carter
Vinegar Syndrome

Washington D.C. sex scandal survivor Rita Jenrette's breasts point vacationers towards ZOMBIE ISLAND MASSACRE, on Blu-ray/DVD combo from Vinegar Syndrome.

On an island in the Antilles, a group of hotel guests – Sandy (Rita Jenrette, THE MALIBU BIKINI SHOP) and Joe (Ian McMillian), photographer Paul (David Broadnax, MISTER DEATHMAN), painter Connie (Diane Clayre Holub) and her current beau Steve (Tom Cantrell), newlyweds Eddie (THE PAPER CHASE's Tom Fitzsimmons) and Donna (Deborah Jason), old timers George (Emmett Murphy) and Ethel (Harriet Rawlings), bickering Jerry (Ralph Monaco, VIGILANTE) and Helen (Debbie Ewing), as well as stoners Matt (Christopher Ferris) and Barbie (Kristina Wetzel, THE FIRST TURN-ON!) – embark on a five day, ten-island tour conducted by Reginald (Dennis Stephenson) starting with St. Marie, also known as "Zombie Island". An initially entertaining voodoo ritual becomes all too uncomfortable for the group when the local color turns red and a real corpse appears to have been reanimated with an animal sacrifice. Even before they notice that Eddie and Donna have disappeared, the group begins to panic after discovering that the bus driver is missing along with the vehicle's distributor cap. When Reginald fails to return from looking for a pay phone, the others must continue on foot hoping to find shelter in a nearby mansion, but their every step is stalked by pursuers who smell like rotting flesh.

Despite the title, ZOMBIE ISLAND MASSACRE does not so much seem like a cash-in on the post-DAWN OF THE DEAD gory zombie craze of the late 1970s and early 1980s. At most, it's more like a gored-up, sexed-up, body count variation on a Poverty Row horror of the previous half of the century where the supernatural is a smokescreen for something more mundane. The film pretty much squanders what elements it could exploit once Jenrette gets her shower out of the way, with a few gore effects by Dennis Eger – who started his career under Dick Smith on DARK SHADOWS – and some limp action scenes all scored by Henry Manfredini with the very overfamiliar strings and stings that spilled over from FRIDAY THE 13TH into the likes of THE HILLS HAVE EYES PART II and SLAUGHTER HIGH. The most one can recommend for the film is to those who have a perverse desire to see what this video eyesore looks like in HD.

Picked up by Troma, ZOMBIE ISLAND MASSACRE was released on VHS by Media Home Entertainment in a darkish transfer that subsequently made its way to DVD from Troma as one of their "Troma Triple B-Header" triple features with BLADES and BLOOD HOOK (also available on Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome). Mastered from a 2K scan of the 35mm original camera negative, Vinegar Syndrome's 1080p24 MPEG-4 AVC 1.85:1 widescreen presentation cannot help but improve on what came before, being brighter and more colorful (particularly during the opening title opticals), better showing off the few effects and Jenrette's bosoms, but it is a cheaply made film with moments of style and a lot of indifference in the coverage. The DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono track boasts clear dialogue and renders the music cleanly enough for one to wonder if the cues are actually new or just recycled snippets from recordings of every other Manfredini score (apart from the infectious "Di Reggae Picnic"). Optional English SDH subtitles are included. Sadly (?), Vinegar Syndrome does not seem to have been able to track down anyone involved in the production, so what we get for extras is a promotional sizzle reel (13:51) of the film's highlights, and the theatrical trailer (2:40) and a pair of TV spots (0:58). The cover is reversible, and the first 2,000 copies ordered directly from Vinegar Syndrome come with a limited embossed slipcover designed by Earl Kessler Jr. (Eric Cotenas)
